Now its Cleo the cat’s turn to speak out and I’m a little nervous – what will she say about living with a writer? What does she really think of my work? What deep dark secrets will she reveal about Secrets Volume 28 Sensual Cravings, or my upcoming release, Pandora’s Gift? Or even worse, will she tell everyone I’m afraid of mice? Check out Cleo’s full interview and let us know what you think at:

1. I used to give my beautiful cat Merlin twice daily injections for his diabetes – at exactly 8am and 8pm every day. Cats are extra tricky when it comes to diabetes and the timing had to be exact. He’s now in heaven hopefully playing like the kitten he used to be.

2. I don’t like ice cream or chocolate but I do love coffee, cheese, salt & vinegar crisps and seafood. Not all at once.

3. I got my head stuck in a hole in a cave at the beach when I was a child and now have a fear of not being able to escape enclosed spaces. For half an hour I thought the tide was going to come in and drown me.

4. My favourite colour is green. It reminds me of nature, large rambling parks and the hills around Melbourne and helps me feel at peace.

5. I know how to make a pair of spectacles, and how to read the prescription in a lens.

6. I sold Avon while at high school and used to go into strangers’ houses after school to teach them makeup tricks. Would I let either of my daughters do that now? No way.

7. My aunt went to Sean Connery’s BAFTA party and I helped her choose the dress she wore!

8. No matter how much time I spend in the sun my legs never turn brown. Even fake tan fails on my legs. Why?

9. Worst hair day ever – while having my hair dyed the hairdresser became ill and left for some time. When she returned my hair was dead white. So she tried to fix it by adding auburn. It came out bright orange. Seriously bright. I cried all the way home. They couldn’t fix it for two weeks.

10. Favourite holiday destination – Port Douglas & Palm Cove in Far North Queensland. Hoping to get back there one day soon.

As an Australian romance author writing for US-based publishing house, Red Sage, I’m curious to find out from romance readers whether there are noticeable differences between the heroes I create and the ones that populate novels written by local US authors.

(This goes for the heroine too, but today I’m focusing on the hero).

How different – if at all – is an Aussie hero when compared to a US one? The question also stands for other countries too, of course. Is there such a thing as the perfect Australian hero, or the perfect US hero, and if so, do I subconsciously draw on those ‘local’ traits when I’m writing?

Are there cultural subtleties that I don’t even notice when I’m deep in the creative process? After all, I’ve never lived anywhere outside Australia, so when I’m developing my perfect romance hero – such as Seducing Serena’s Nick Wade in the recently released Secrets Volume 28 anthology, or Flint McCallum in my upcoming Red Sage e-book, Pandora’s Gift – is he clearly from a certain place or culture?

I understand that everyone has different ideas about what makes an enticing or intriguing hero, and in my view those broader brush personal needs and desires have little to do with location. And of course, if we all wrote only about what we’d directly experienced, there’d be no such thing as science fiction or fantasy! That’s what imagination is for!

I guess my query is on a more microcosmic level. Are there nuances in tone, in the words that my hero uses, in gestures or actions, even in the way he looks or what he chooses to wear, that states – yeah, I’m from Australia?

Personally, I believe cultural heritage and geographical location have a lot to do with the subconscious creative process. How can they not? But I also think my need for a hero with Nick’s qualities and characteristics came from somewhere much deeper than place. And I suspect he’d have been the same even if I’d grown up elsewhere.

With four erotic romance novellas written by Australian, Canadian and US authors, Secrets Volume 28 is a perfect place to explore this query. I’d love to hear your comments!

I had my first taste of marketing last week with the publication of an article about my novella, Seducing Serena in Red Sage Secrets Volume 28 SENSUAL CRAVINGS. The article appeared in our local newspaper, Whitehorse Leader, on 9th December. I was excited about it, of course, but I was also really nervous as you don’t get to see or ‘vet’ the words or photo before it comes out. But James (journalist) and Marty (photographer) were kind!! And I’m happy to share the link to the article for anyone who wants to read it:

Jennifer Lynne interview

As a consequence of that article, I had an email yesterday from a person who said I have inspired her to write her own book. If my work does nothing else but inspire that one person to follow her dream, then I have achieved a great deal indeed!
