Today’s guest is erotic romance author, Doris O’Connor. She’s talking about a writer’s inspiration and where it comes from. Please leave a comment for Doris on this fascinating post which includes a HOT 18+ excerpt from Too Hot to Handle:

One thing I am always asked is where my inspiration comes from. The other one is, but how does it work, really? Trying to explain to a non-writer that I simply follow the voices in my head always has me looking over my shoulder nervously, in case they call the men in the white coats, and cart me off to the mental asylum.

I suppose it must sound strange to someone, who hasn’t experienced it. Even hubby had a hard time getting his head round the fact that my characters are real people in their own right, who I have regular arguments with. He is used to me muttering now, when I write, or telling him about a particularly stubborn hero, who will simply not do as he’s told. I don’t know why I even try to argue with them to be honest. They always win!

Arguing just means they’re going into a sulk and stop talking to me, and then what do I do? Well, I go and catch up on my ever growing TBR pile. Never fails to get the voices back.

So, inspiration—where does it come from? Anything and anywhere would be the answer to that one. A lot of my ideas come to me in dreams. I have dreamt entire scenes before now. The bath is another place to shut my eyes and let my mind wander. Sometimes it’s a picture, an overheard conversation, a newspaper article, even my children.

Whole parts of Too Hot To Handle were inspired by my then three year old. I smile to myself now when I read them, his little sayings forever memorized.

The other big inspiration for Too Hot To Handle was found in True Blood. I’m a huge fan of the series and I’d already used Eric for the hero in my Erotic romance Scandinavian Scandal, so when I first thought about Alex Giovanni, Alcide popped into my head.

I’m sure you can see how he would be inspirational right?

I knew he needed a strong, fiery heroine to stand up to him and his interfering Mamma, so Kitty popped into my head. I wasn’t entirely sure about Alex’s profession. Originally this story was first set in an office. Then I thought about setting it in Italy and Kitty was an au-pair. And then I was early for school pick up time one day. I sat in my car, waiting for the fire engine to leave, after one of their educational visits, and I observed the interaction between some of the staff and the firefighters, and I giggled to myself. Something about firefighters that turns grown women into giggling school girls…

Now there was a story just begging to be written, so Alex became a firefighter and Kitty a school teacher and the rest is beautiful history. Being a panster the story took on a life of its own, and Alex’s Mamma, well you have to read the book. She undergoes something of a journey herself and is a constant through the series of the Giovanni Clan. I’m still toying with the idea of giving Stella Giovanni her own book.

So, there you have it, a little insight into how this story came about. I can’t always pinpoint my inspiration this precisely, because an idea can hit me out of nowhere and with no warning. My upcoming Naughty Fairytale with Breathless Press, for instance, just grabbed hold of me one day and I sat down to write and couldn’t stop until it was done.

And with Too Hot To Handle too, once I started writing it, there was no stopping me, until Kitty and Alex had their HEA. Because it has to be a HEA. I couldn’t write a story without one.

Blurb:

When firefighter Alex Giovanni returns to his old neighborhood to fulfill family obligations, he is reunited with the woman inhabiting his dreams. The sexy siren ran out on him after one explosive night many years ago. Hiding behind her sensible clothes she portrays the perfect image of Miss Prim and Proper and Alex vows to unlock the passionate woman he remembers. Mixing business with pleasure has never been so much fun.

Kitty Jenkins’ orderly life gets turned upside down when Alex walks into her school. Their passion filled night four years ago has left her with a secret that threatens to tear them apart. Giving into Alex is out of the question, regardless of how much her body craves his touch.

When secrets spill and disaster strikes, can their passion turn into love?

Excerpt (Adult-rated, 18+):

Kitty’s heart beat a strange staccato against her breastbone. What had possessed her to slip back into her school girl outfit, she would never know. Yet here she was, dressed like some third-rate hooker, about to embark on a one night stand. Taking a deep, fortifying breath, she knocked on the door of Alex’s hotel room. All was quiet on the other side, and she was just about to turn round when the door opened; and Kitty’s greeting stuck in her throat.

Dressed in nothing but low riding jeans, Alex smiled at her, and she hastily wrenched her eyes upwards from the incredible abs on display. Covered with a light dusting of chest hair that trailed down to his jeans, they would give any model a run for his money, and Kitty swallowed. Dressed he was bad enough, but like this he was breathtaking, and judging by that lazy smile he knew it, too.

“Room service around here just keeps on getting better.” Alex’s husky voice raised goose bumps on her exposed skin. “Coming in?”

He hooked one finger under her chin and tugged the end of her shirt tails with the other hand, forcing her to take a step toward him.

“I-I shouldn’t be here, really. I’m not sure why I’m even here.” Kitty mumbled the words, and heat spread into her cheeks.

Alex merely smiled and pulled her closer still. “Liar, we both know why you’re here. Question is, my naughty little girl, will you step through the door and expand your curriculum?” Alex’s heated whispers against her ear sent her heart into overdrive, and she leant into his warmth. His clean, male scent wrapped itself round her senses, and her stomach flip-flopped in delicious anticipation. It had been so long since any man had held her. That had to be the reason for her immediate reaction to this man.

“Well, Sir, that all depends what you have in mind, because I have been very naughty.”

Alex went very still at her breathy statement, and Kitty bit her lip. Has she read this wrong? Was he not up for a little role-play? She hesitantly raised her eyes to his face to read his expression, and the heat in his gaze scorched her skin.

“So, I’ve heard. Come here, and take your punishment.” His deep voice had dropped several octaves, and he grabbed her by the wrist and spun her into the room. The door clicked shut, the sound loud in the quiet room, and before she could even blink, he had her pinned against the wall. One jeans clad thigh spread her legs wide, and he raised her hands high above her head, whilst his other hand blazed a trail of heat along her exposed tummy. His mouth claimed hers in a bruising kiss, and she opened to his quiet demand automatically. His tongue found hers in an erotic dance that left her jelly-legged, breathless, and grateful for his big body holding her up against the wall.

He groaned his approval when she kissed him back, and he deepened the kiss, his fingers slowly slipping south, until they dipped under the elastic of her thong.

“My, you are a naughty girl. What have we here?”

He chuckled into her neck, and Kitty gasped when he thrust one finger into her wet core.

“So wet already, and we’ve only just started.” He flicked her clitoris once, and the slight pain caused a renewed burst of moisture to coat his fingers as he inserted another finger into her and found her g-spot. Kitty moaned into his shoulder as sensations built deep inside her core, and he licked himself down the column of her throat towards her breast. She screamed when he bit one nipple through the shirt and bra and thrust her hips at him, desperate to reach the release his talented fingers were driving her toward.

“Not so fast. You’re being punished, remember.”

Alex smiled and withdrew his fingers. He licked each digit in turn, murmuring his approval and then stepped back, his heated gaze roaming over her body. Kitty clenched her thighs together in a vain effort to relieve the hot ache in her pussy.

“Spread your legs, naughty girl.” Alex growled the demand, and Kitty’s eyes widened at the steely determination she saw in his face. “You will not come until I give you permission. Do you hear me?”

“Yes.” Good God, does that porn star voice really belong to me?

Alex’s eyes narrowed, and Kitty automatically dropped her gaze. She licked her lips, seeing the huge erection straining the flies of his jeans. Oh my. He was clearly as turned on as she by their little game. But how far would he take this? And did she trust him enough to find out?

“Yes, what?” His deep voice held an edge of steel, and she bit back her moan. That voice alone would send her over the edge. Who’d have thought a little role-play could be so erotic?

“Yes, Sir.”

“Good girl. Now strip – slowly.”

Alex’s voice brooked no argument, and Kitty hastened to comply. She fumbled with the tails of her blouse until Alex stepped forward and ripped the thing clean off her.

“Not that slowly.”

His eyes wicked, he unhooked her bra and sent that, too, flying. He whistled his approval as her breasts fell free. He cupped each mound in turn, and spun her around and toward the double bed, which took up one side of the hotel room. The slap on her ass took her by surprise, and she yelped. He soothed the sting with his large hand massaging her ass cheeks, and he chuckled into her neck.

His fingers once again dipped into her wet folds, and she froze when he inserted one digit, slick with her juices, into her anus. Heaven help her, that felt way too good. Heat spread across her skin, and Alex bit into her earlobe, as his fingers continued their erotic dance in and out of her forbidden passage, and her body betrayed her arousal by a renewed gush of moisture between her legs.

“That’s my naughty girl.” Alex’s erratic breathing into her neck pitched her own arousal sky high, and she put up no resistance when he urged her onto the bed, his naked, warm, torso heating her back.

“Get on all fours for me.”

It’s so easy to let life get in the way, isn’t it? No matter where you live or what you do, the obligations of everyday life can keep us so busy that the important things get pushed aside. It’s not that we don’t want to do them. It’s not that we don’t think they’re important. And we’ll get to them – really – as soon as we have the time.

My writing was like that for a long time. Growing up, I knew I wanted to be a writer. I wrote poems and short stories, always scribbling something in an ever-present notebook. But I got married young, had two children, a full time job, a house to take care of, and I’d fall into bed exhausted. I just didn’t have the time to write. I can relate to Amy, the heroine in RISK IT, all too well.

It was only when my daughter graduated from college and my son graduated from high school in the same year that I took back the time for me to write. Since then I’ve published or contracted a total of 19 novels, novellas and short stories. And though my life is still busy with husband and house and full time job, I’m still writing. I make the time. It’s important to me.

I wish I’d done it sooner.

RISK IT, my latest release from Samhain, is #2 in the Paolo’s Playhouse series. FLAUNT IT was released in Aug 2011. BIRTHDAY GIRL will be released next month, and PLAYTHING, the final story in the series will be available in May 2012.

Here’s the blurb:

On the outside, Amy has the American dream. Two busy kids, a job she loves, a big house thanks to her husband’s climb up the corporate ladder. What she hasn’t had in a long time…is sex. Sure, she’s too exhausted at night to think about it, but maybe Will’s long hours at work aren’t the real reason he rarely touches her anymore.

Feeling her marriage teetering on the edge, she rents the voyeur room at Paolo’s Playhouse. Maybe bringing back the memory of the one wicked thing they used to do together will relight the sparks.

Will loves his wife, but she’s never been one to take chances—except for the time before kids, when they’d camp out in a club’s back booth, getting all worked up watching the dirty dancers. Their careers have seriously cut into their “us” time, and if she’s booked them a sexual playroom, it sounds like she’s serious about solving the problem.

When Will shows up way, way late, Amy wonders why she bothered, and if her plan to relight the flame has only made it painfully clear that it’s too late to try.

Excerpt:

The door opened again. Paolo stepped into the room. “Your husband has not arrived?”

She took a deep, shaky breath. “No.”

He sat down in the chair beside her. “It is difficult to wait, isn’t it?” She nodded, looking down at her hands, clasped in her lap. “Especially for someone you care for so much.”

Amy nodded again. She thought she heard a touch of pain in his voice. Perhaps this handsome man had had his share of heartbreak. Maybe he did understand.

“I…um, I was really looking forward to this evening. We have two children and busy jobs, and we don’t get much time alone.”

“People like you and your husband are the very reason the Playhouse was started,” he said smoothly. “There are not many safe places for people to indulge in a private fantasy. Or to try something new. To take a risk.”

Sometimes risks didn’t pay off. Paolo must be an expert at this fantasy thing, must see tons of people come and go. As he calmly sat there beside her, not judging but supporting, she found herself pouring out her troubled thoughts.

“It’s not that I don’t like sex. I do. But why can’t he understand that I get so tired? I work all day and come home to the kids and dinner and homework and laundry, and by the time I fall into bed, sex is the last thing on my mind!” Her hand flew to her mouth, as if she could take back that outpouring of words. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to go off like that.”

“It’s all right. But you know, of course, that you must make time for each other.”

“But he’s just as bad. He’s been working all these long hours lately and comes home just in time to go to bed and then expects a quickie before he rolls over and goes to sleep.” Like last night. “What am I supposed to do?”

“My answer is the same. You must make your time together as important as your careers or your children or your laundry.”

Easier said than done. But… “I love him.”

“Of course you do. And you’re here to make things better, right? This playroom, the blue room, it has a special meaning for you both?”

“I thought it did, but it looks like I’ve been stood up.” Obviously, this night alone together didn’t mean anything to Will.

Paolo took her hand. “I’m certain your husband wanted to be here.” He glanced at his watch. “Perhaps you would like to reschedule?”

“No.” Why couldn’t they wait a little longer? “Oh, I suppose the other couple has…”

“Yes, they’ve already started.”

She rose to her feet. The hell with Will anyway. Postponing it until another night wasn’t going to make any difference. She flashed Paolo a shaky smile. “Well, I don’t want to miss that. Could you take me to the playroom now, please?”

Natasha Moore fell in love with the written word as soon as she could read. As she grew up, she discovered romance and now enjoys the chance to add some extra sizzle to her stories. She writes sexy contemporary and erotic romance for Samhain, Ellora’s Cave and Red Sage. She lives in New York State with her real life hero who is happy to tell everyone that he’s her inspiration. They travel in their RV whenever possible. The great thing about writing is she can take it anywhere.

I think they’ve done a great job – and it’s making me hungry for muffins!

Educating Ethan is an older woman/younger man love story. Here’s the blurb:

Ida Deloraine intends to build herself a new life and a catering career, after a painful divorce. When the much younger Ethan Holt moves in across the street, an innocent flirtation quickly becomes serious when the two realise their age difference is no barrier to all-consuming passion. But Ethan is the exact opposite of what Ida is looking for in a sexual partner. He is young and vibrant, and in her eyes his life and dreams are still ahead of him, whereas hers are all in the past.

Can Ethan, who is fighting his own demons in the form of a car accident, failed marriage and forced career change, convince Ida to overcome the past and live for the moment?

And just who is educating who in this cougar encounter?

Educating Ethan has a tentative release date from Breathless Press of February 24th.

They’ve been transported to a lush tropical beach in far north Queensland by Pothos, the ancient Greek god of sexual yearning. By the power of the erotes, Pothos intends to rekindle the flame of Jake and Jeannie’s passion in a night of desire that will be the ultimate platinum anniversary gift:

She closed her eyes and inhaled deeply, then opened her eyes to see both men staring at her. One was the partner she had spent most of her life loving, the other the epitome of romance and eroticism that had been conjured presumably out of her somewhat warped imagination.

I’m very excited to have erotic romance author Roz Lee visit my blog today. She’s my first ever guest author and I’d love you to drop by and help her feel welcome. Leave a comment and you could WIN one of Roz Lee’s back list titles.

Roz says –

One of the best things about being a fiction writer is living vicariously through my characters. I won’t lie – it’s a blast putting ideas into the heads of my characters, then following through on them. Believe me, my characters do many things I would never do myself! Isn’t that why we read fiction anyway?

I recently found myself in a wait and see situation with a group of my writer friends. We needed something to pass the time, so I pulled out a little pocket-sized book entitled What Every Woman Should Do Once. As we went through the list of sixty or so things, we had a few laughs, confessing to more than I would have thought, and respectfully declining to answer a few times. I believe we have some potential blackmail material now too, if the need ever arises!

We had such a good time, I thought you might enjoy playing along. There isn’t room to list them all, so I’ve chosen my favorites. I tried to limit myself to only ten, but I just couldn’t!

Things every woman should do once.

1. Make up an alias. (This was a unanimous one, as you can imagine from a bunch of writers.)

2. Give someone famous your autograph. (We actually had a couple of takers on this one!)

3. Dance on top of a bar. (I’m embarrassed to tell you how many said they’d done this.)

4. Audition for a Broadway show or a TV Reality show. (Yep. Had one of these too!)

5. Go skydiving. (We all agreed not to jump out of perfectly good airplanes.)

6. Try on very expensive clothes in a boutique you know you can’t afford. (Sadly, this was unanimous too.)

7. Talk in a foreign accent all day. (Oh yeah, we’ve done this too!)

8. Have a three martini lunch, and go back to work refreshed. (Well, we wouldn’t call it refreshed exactly. <grin>)

9. Wear fake eyelashes and send him come hither looks. (Those with experience reported that trying to keep your eyelids open with all that extra weight could be mistaken for come hither looks. *wink*)

10. Learn to tango. (Sadly, we only had one taker on this one. I think we need to fix that.)

11. Kiss a guy from every state. (We weren’t clear if we had to go to each state or if we could kiss ‘em where we found ‘em.)

12. Try bondage sex. (No, this one wasn’t in the book!!)

Yeah, I added that one because Candace, my heroine in FOUR OF HEARTS, asks her husband to tie her up and sets in motion a series of events that change their lives. It’s a story about the infinity capacity of the human heart to love.

Here’s a blurb and excerpt from book 4 in the Lothario series, FOUR OF HEARTS.

Blurb –

Marriage hasn’t tamed Candace Callahan’s sexual curiosity, something her husband Ryan is grateful for, but when she asks him to tie her up for her anniversary present, he knows he’s going to need the help of their friends, Richard Wolfe and his wife, Fallon.

Dr. Fallon Enright is the resident sex therapist aboard the Lothario – the cruise ship co-owned by her husband and Ryan Callahan. When Ryan asks to participate in one of their couple’s rope bondage classes, Richard isn’t sure it’s a good idea, but Fallon assures him all will be well.

What begins as innocent curiosity, blossoms into a polyamorous relationship none of them could have expected, but they are powerless to ignore. When the tabloids expose their new lifestyle, the foursome must choose between the love they feel for each other, or accepting society’s moral constraints.

Excerpt –

Ryan froze with his lips against the pulse in Candace’s neck. His erection surged with new vigor against her stomach. Why couldn’t his wife ask for something easy for their anniversary? Something like diamonds, a villa in France, hell, even an expedition to the North Pole. The image in his brain coalesced, and he knew he would give her whatever she wanted.

“You want me to tie you up?” he asked as soon as he found his voice.

“Don’t even try to tell me it doesn’t excite you.” Candace wiggled her soft mound against his cock. “I felt that.”

He had no intention of denying his interest. Only a fool would, and Ryan Callahan was no fool. He continued his exploration of his wife’s creamy soft skin, all the while forming and reforming the new image in his head. His lips left her neck, slipped to her shoulder where he tasted every inch of skin, before angling lower toward the perfect swell of her breasts. His hands held hers pinned flat on either side of her head. He’d tied her hands once, when he’d spirited her away from the Lothario and onto the Vixen, but that had been role-playing more than anything else. He was pretty sure she had something more in mind. He hoped to God she did.

Her request shouldn’t have been a surprise. She’d spent a lot of time lately talking to his best friend’s wife. Rope bondage was Fallon’s new research topic, and a passion shared with her husband Richard. Ryan inched his way lower, and teased one nipple to a marble hard peak with his tongue, before taking it in his mouth. Candace drew in a sharp breath and arched her back, encouraging him to suck harder. He obliged his wife.

His wife. The moniker still sent a thrill through his body every time he thought, or said the word. Candace Callahan. His wife. God, what a wondrous thing that was. For nearly a year, she’d been his constant companion, his lover, his…everything. Before he met Candace, he’d been lost and alone, searching for something he couldn’t name. Now it had a name. Love.

“Well?” Candace prodded on a gasp as Ryan switched breasts, sucking the poor, neglected one in his mouth without preamble.

Surely, she knew the answer. He couldn’t deny her anything. Still, he made her wait for his reply. It wasn’t as if he hadn’t given it any thought himself. There wasn’t much he hadn’t imagined doing with Candace.

He released her hands and slid lower until he lay pillowed between her thighs. He brushed his thumbs over the neatly trimmed auburn triangle that drew him like a compass needle to magnetic north. The scent of her arousal filled his nostrils and fueled a primal need. He swept his tongue through her juices. She ground her swollen flesh against his face, and he knew she’d forgotten everything but this. He dedicated himself to keeping the status quo for the foreseeable future.

About Roz Lee –

Roz Lee has been married to her best friend, and high school sweetheart, for over three decades. These days she splits her time between their home in rural New Jersey, and Southern California, where her husband works. Even though she’s lived on both coasts, her heart lies in between, in Texas. A Texan by birth, she can trace her family back to the Republic of Texas. With roots that deep, she says, “You can’t ever really leave.”

Roz and her husband have two grown daughters they couldn’t be more proud of, and are currently raising a eleven-year-old Labrador Retriever, Betty Boop, who isn’t aware of her canine heritage.

When Roz isn’t writing, she’s reading, or traipsing around the country on one adventure or another. No trip is too small, no tourist trap too cheesy, and no road unworthy of traveling.

I’m excited to share the cover of my upcoming erotic romance, Platinum Passion. The cover was designed by the talented Kimberly Killion at Hot Damn Designs and I think she’s done a wonderful job conveying the sensual feel of my paranormal erotic M/M/F menage What do you think? Anyone (over 18) who leaves a comment on my website between now and the end of this month will go in the draw to win a digital copy of Platinum Passion on release day.

This is the first in my Gods of Love series. It will be out on Amazon, Smashwords and other ebook retailers in December. Here’s the blurb:

Three people. One fantasy. And a twentieth wedding anniversary like no other.

Jeannie longs for the return of passion in her marriage. Jake craves new excitement in the form of another man. Pothos is one of the erotes and an aspect of Eros, the ancient Greek god of love, and this couple’s distinctive yearning has called to him. By the power of the erotes he intends to rekindle the flame of Jake and Jeannie’s passion in a night of desire that will be the ultimate platinum anniversary gift.

And when the gods of love decide your marriage needs a boost, they never do it by halves.

Platinum Passion is the first in this series of novella length stories about the erotes. There are many versions of the mythology surrounding the erotes, but the one that resonates best with me is that they were aspects of the primal god, Eros. As an erotic romance writer I was fascinated by the idea that the concept of desire is so vast and complex that its various aspects could only be personified across several beings.

While the erotic author in me applauds the idea of the greatness of Eros, I also love the idea that his power, and therefore that of the erotes, stems primarily from a woman (yep!), the Greek goddess Aphrodite, born of the sea. She is purported to be the mother of the erotes.

Her influence will be evident throughout the Gods of Love series. But my celebration of the ancient Greek gods of love begins in Platinum Passion with the gorgeous Pothos, god of sexual yearning.

In addition to the excitement of having sold my sensual romance, Educating Ethan, to the wonderful Breathless Press Publishing, I’ve just finished editing Platinum Passion, the first in my upcoming Gods of Love series about the erotes as aspects of Eros.

All, mind you, while recovering from shoulder surgery and typing with my left hand only! If you need something to distract you from the pain, and you can’t drive, cook or clean (or even fasten your bra!), you might as well write, right?

It was one slow keystroke at a time, but the finish line is now in sight. While a release date is yet to be set for Educating Ethan, I’m aiming for my indie-published work, Platinum Passion, to be out by the end of this year.

Researching the mythology of the erotes has been heavenly territory for an erotic romance author! Platinum Passion is my first M/M/F menage story, and I had so much fun writing this it definitely won’t be the last. As I don’t have the cover available yet, I’ve included a picture of Mount Olympus in Greece, the ‘home’ of the ancient Greek gods.

Here’s the blurb for Platinum Passion:
Three people. One fantasy. And a twentieth wedding anniversary like no other.

Jeannie yearns for the return of passion in her marriage. Jakes craves new excitement in the form of another man. By the power of the erotes he intends to rekindle the flame of Jake and Jeannie’s passion in a night of desire that will be the ultimate platinum anniversary gift.

And when the gods of love decide your marriage needs a boost, they never do it by halves…

I’ll post the cover as soon as it becomes available. Ditto for Educating Ethan.

Doing the happy dance here. Ouch! That hurt the shoulder. Okay, s’pose it’s time to slink away and do some more joint stretches again.

Jen
